Black Box Collotype of Chicago spent years in research developing a method of continuous tone screenless lithography, called ACT (Advanced Continuous Tone). The ACT process allows the image to go directly from a digital source to an advanced flatbed printer, which applies permanent dyes and inks to paper without a screen, thus creating an actual continuous tone ink-on-paper archival print. With ACT printing, the fine grain pattern is applied to the film as it is scanned and separated, creating a resolution of 650 line "grain". Using principles of extended range and extended gamut ACT prints are created with a far wider range of color than the usual 'four color process.'
